It is a good idea to make a point of visiting the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano from March through October because we can have snow during the winter months. But we are now open all year long so just call 505-783-4303 for trail conditions.

The Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano are located in the west-central Zuni Mountain range of New Mexico, where NM State Hwy 53 crosses the North American Continental Divide. Our GPS coordinates are 35˚ 00.002’N by 108˚ 04.388’W at the entrance to our driveway off Hwy 53, and 34˚ 59.592’N by 108˚ 04.836’W at our front door. The location on a highway map is NM State Hwy 53, 25-26 miles southwest of Grants, NM from Exit 81 on I-40. Our mailing address is 12000 Ice Caves Rd. Grants, NM 87020. Historically, we are located along the Zuni-Acoma Trade Route and Coronado’s Trail, likely Chacoan outlier site. If you see these signs, you are here. (add pictures of signs?)

For a real experience in contrast, visit the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano, “The Land of Fire and Ice,” right on the Continental Divide. Walk through the twisted old-growth Juniper, Fir, and Ponderosa Pine trees; over the ancient lava trails; down into the cave; and into a dormant volcano. Inside the cave, the natural layers of ice glisten blue-green in the reflected rays of sunlight illuminating natural arctic algae. Take a walk around the Bandera Volcano and view one of the best examples of volcanic eruption in the country. Browse the historic Ice Caves Trading Post featuring ancient artifacts, geologic souvenirs, refreshing snacks, and warm New Mexican hospitality.

The Ice Cave offers a unique field trip experience for students and teachers alike. Here in the education corner, we offer information that allows you to make the most of your field trip.
